The York Theater Company is the only theater in New York – and one of the few in the world – dedicated to the development and full production of new musicals and the preservation of neglected and notable performances of the past. For more than five decades, York’s intimate and imaginative style in producing original and classic musicals has garnered critical acclaim and recognition from performers and audiences alike. Under the direction of Production Artistic Director James Morgan since 1997, The York has focused on new musicals in its Mainstage series – most of them world, US or New York premieres – by some of the esteemed creators in the field and has also helped launch the careers of many talented new writers. Over 40 cast recordings of York Theater Company productions are now available on CD, including his acclaimed cover of closer than ever (2013 Off-Broadway Alliance Award for Best Revival); commercial transfers of firsts to York such as The Musical of Musicals (The Musical!), Souvenir (Tony Award nomination for actress Judy Kaye), and Jolson & Companyand the covers of Pacific Openings and Sweeney Todd (four Tony nominations, including Best Revival) have all highlighted the importance of The York and its programs.

Recent New York premieres have included Marrying Harry, a taste of things to comeand Rothschild & Sons. The critically acclaimed musical Yank! made its Off-Broadway debut at York in 2010, and went on to rave reviews in London, as did York’s Rothschild & Sons. The hit musical Cagney received its York premiere in 2015, moving to the Westside Theater for over 15 months. In 2017, Desperate measures received a total of 15 award nominations (and three wins) including “Best Musical” from Lucille Lortel, Outer Critics Circle, Drama Desk and Off-Broadway Alliance and later moved across town to New World Stages. The York received a Special Drama Desk Award for “Developing and Producing New Musicals” and most recently an Outer Critics Circle Special Award for “50 Years of Producing New and Classic Musicals”. Due to a flood at their 30-year-old home at St. Peter’s Church in January 2021, The York is currently performing at St. Jeans’ Theater at 76th Street and Lexington Avenue.
