Primus returned to the stage Tuesday at Boise, the Ford Idaho Center in Idaho to kick off their A Tribute To Kings tour. The trio performed all the Rush A farewell to kings album after focusing on the original material early in the night.

Bass player The Claypool, guitarist Larry LaLonde and drummer Tim “Grass” Alexander opened their first concert in front of an audience since November 30, 2019 with “Those Damned Blue-Collar Tweekers” from the years 1991 Sail the seas of cheese. Then it was “Mr. Knowitall” and “Groundhog’s Day” from their 1990 debut LP, Frizzle fry. Then, “Fisticuffs” represented the years 1997 Brown album before the trio worked on the title tracks “Seas Of Cheese” and “Frizzle Fry”.

Primus closed the pre-A farewell to kings part of their show by pairing the clips “My Name Is Mud” and “Over The Electric Grapevine”. The group then performed all six tracks from Rush’s famous 1977 studio album as wild images were displayed behind them. The Claypool recently revealed he “learned from the master” by posting a photo in which he was joined by Rush bassist Geddy Lee.

Geddy’s Claypool lessons paid dividends with Les propelling both the vocal and bass parts of A farewell to kings. The crowd seemed particularly excited when Primus lit up in “Closer To The Heart”, the Rush LP’s best-known song. Les, Larry, and Tim stayed true to the original throughout A farewell to kings which ended with a 12-minute “Cygnus X-1”, the only song on the album that Primus had covered before.

Primus left the scene after “Cygnus X-1”. The group then returned to wrap up the night with an encore featuring the beloved classics “Wynona’s Big Brown Beaver” and “Southbound Pachyderm”. The tour continues until October 25. Next up is a concert at the Kettlehouse Amphitheater in Bonner, MT tonight.
