CLEVELAND, Ohio – Todd Haynes has directed a few music-related feature films (“Velvet Goldmine”, “I’m Not There”) but never a documentary. But when Universal Music Group proposed him to lead “The Velvet Underground,” which begins airing Friday, October 15 via Apple TV +, Haynes was immediately interested.

“I was like, ‘Yeah, sign me up,’ Haynes says. The result is a two-hour full length film loaded with invaluable footage from the VU era as a ‘house group’ for avant-garde underground art in New York City in the late 1960s, plus new interviews. with surviving members John Cale and Maureen Tucker and others from the scene. “I’m quite a Velvets fan,” Haynes said in a virtual interview. “It was a cohesive part of the music that I had already explored in some of my films, almost like the prequel to ‘Velvet Goldmine’. In many ways, this is how I discovered the Velvet Underground, having listened to and listened to (David) Bowie and Roxy (Music), Patti Smith, punk before – music I never knew it had. was sort of impossible without the Velvet Undergound as the core kind. In addition to the film, a soundtrack album was also released featuring 17 songs from the band and its influences, including Bob Diddley, the Diablos and the Primitives.
