For over a year of recording Tiny Desk concerts (at home), artists have worked hard to replicate the Tiny Desk vibe with special effects ranging from the backdrop of Phoebe Bridgers’ Oval Office to the miniature assembly improving the small size. Dinosaur Jr.’s home concert – “home” in this case being the stage of an empty Shea theater in Turners Falls, Mass. – takes place amid its own enviable assortment of quirks, from stuffed animals to a Mork action figure to a scrapbook copy Christmas together by John Denver and the Muppets. And you don’t stay as a band for all or part of five decades without knowing a little something about product placement: the terrific new album from Dinosaur Jr., Sweep it in space, is in plain view near the small plastic desk that sits at the front and center of the stage.
Naturally, this album dominates this set of five songs, which finds the trio of singer-guitarist J Mascis, singer-bassist Lou Barlow and drummer Murph to sound as smooth, powerful and gnarly as ever. Mascis can unleash a few shredding solos, Barlow takes the lead in “Garden” and Murph does his job near a pair of large dinosaur-shaped balloons. In addition, longtime fans are treated to two great classics from the start of Dinosaur Jr.’s excellent career: “Feel the Pain” from 1994 Without a sound, and “Freak Scene”, which opens in the years 1988 Bug.
