Sarasota Concert Association opens 2022 Musical Matinees Series

The Sarasota Concert Association will open its 4 Music Matinee concert series on Wednesday, January 12 at noon in the David Cohen Hall of the Beatrice Friedman Symphony Center. Sarasota’s favorite passerines will wow audiences with their vocal harmonies, original compositions and acoustic string sounds. Passerine presents new interpretations of traditional and bluegrass folk music, as well as a repertoire of original songs that range from sweet ballads to the more daring side of contemporary Americana.

Tickets are free, but prior registration is required for all Music Matinee concerts. Tickets are available on the Sarasota Concert Association website, www.SCAsarasota.org or by calling the box office at (941) 966-6161. Patrons attending these concerts will be required to follow health and safety protocol as detailed on the website.

On Wednesday February 9, violinist Sun-Young Gemma Shin is accompanied in recital by pianist Avis Romm. Dr. Shin is an internationally renowned soloist of baroque and modern violin music, and principal violin of the Sarasota Chamber Orchestra. Avis Romm is an accomplished soloist, chamber musician and collaborative pianist, performing with internationally renowned soloists, as well as having been a music / vocal coach and pianist / conductor with Sarasota Opera.

The Sarasota Opera performers perform on Wednesday, March 16. These young singers are an integral part of the Sarasota opera season and serve as understudies in stage productions throughout the season.

The last performance of the Music Matinee 2022 series will take place on Wednesday April 13 with the GS Duo. Flautist Angela Galestro and guitarist Jonathan Smith offer their diverse repertoire of jazz, classical, Latin American and popular music. Noted for their victory at the American Prize Chamber Music Competition, they were the only two-person chamber music ensemble to win a first prize in this category.

Sparrow

Wednesday January 12, 12 p.m., David Cohen Hall, Beatrice Friedman Symphony Center

With original compositions and their own arrangements inspired by modern folk, bluegrass and Americana, Passerine offers music for acoustic strings that draws on their varied musical influences ranging from Woody Guthrie to the Black Keys and many more. Passerine will charm with gentle ballads on the more daring side of contemporary Americana.

Baroque and modern violin performer as soloist, chamber musician and conductor, Dr. Shin has been busy wowing audiences through live and live performances, participating in St. Boniface Quarantine series. From San Francisco to Sarasota, Avis Romm performs as a soloist, chamber musician and collaborative pianist with internationally renowned soloists. She has worked extensively with the Sarasota Opera House, both as a music / vocal coach and pianist / conductor.

Wednesday March 16, 12 p.m., David Cohen Hall, Beatrice Friedman Symphony Center

The Sarasota Opera Studio Artists are a select group of emerging artists who perform in stage productions studying lead roles and playing supporting roles, gaining valuable experience in the process. With dozens of roles requiring understudies each season, studio performers often step in to replace an ill or injured principal, sometimes without notice.

GS Duo

Wednesday April 13, 12 p.m., David Cohen Hall, Beatrice Friedman Symphony Center

Presenting a repertoire of classical, jazz, Latin American and contemporary music, flutist Angela Galestro and guitarist Jonathan Smith have showcased their collaborative musical talents since 2010. The group won second place at the American Prize Chamber Music Competition.
