(MAPLEWOOD, NJ) – Maplewood Arts and Culture Division announced the lineup for the 2021 Springfield Avenue Gazebo concert series. Outdoor, live and in-person performances are scheduled for 7 p.m. on Fridays from July 30 to August 27 and are free, family-friendly and open to the public.

Curator of the highly anticipated concert series and director of Maplewood’s arts and culture division Ana De Archuleta said, “Springfield Avenue is an active and vibrant neighborhood in Maplewood. Adding live music strengthens a sense of community. Grab your blanket or lawn chair and come discover new sounds, fresh rhythms and original dance steps. This summer’s selections promise to make participants dance and sing.

The program kicks off Friday July 30 with the return of the Favorite Band of 2020 Verdict, rockin ‘a cheerful, energetic vibe. The next step is Afrocuba August 6 with salsa beats and flavors – find yourself a dance partner. Upbeat and pop motown follows with EPICSOUL August 13. Maplewood’s clean Fall Jones, like we’ve never seen her before, with Big Band August 20 mixes with soul R&B, Funk and Hip Hop. And the season closing on August 27 is the world Gypsy Funk Squad with a musical journey around the world encompassing the cultural traditions and sounds of Armenia, the Balkans, Egypt, Greece, India, Israel, Lebanon, Turkey and more – expressing oneself through belly dancing is totally acceptable here!

July 30 – VEREDIT Rockin ‘the home of venues as diverse as the legendary Stone Pony in Asbury Park to the NFL Owners Reunion at the Super Bowl in Miami. Their refined energy has been fed from the many jam experiences with Chaka Khan and Stevie Wonder (what a surreal moment to have Johnny whispering the lyrics to Marley’s “Waiting in Vain” in Stevie’s), performing “Stir it Up” and “Spain” by Chick Corea with Prince Ali of Iran seated on drums.

August 6 – AFROCUBA BAND One of the most sought after salsa bands in North Jersey, ideal for weddings, private parties, festivals and corporate events (Salsa Band NJ). Since 2001, John Acevedo’s Cuban group has performed in a wide variety of venues along the east coast. Authentic Cuban music and Latin jazz performed by the best percussionists and instrumentalists in New York (Cuban Band NJ).

August 13 – EPICSOUL BAND From soulful Motown sounds to today’s hottest R&B and POP hits. The Tri-State Region’s premier party group turns 11. Amazing and powerful horn section consists of trumpets / flugel horns, saxophones / flutes and trombones (wireless for crowd access)! The rhythm section of drums, congas, guitar, bass and keyboards forms the basis. Interpretation of a wide range of music – Motown, classical R&B, Latin music, contemporary pop and jazz standards.

August 20 – JONES & BIG BAND FALL Maplewood singer-songwriter whose moving R&B is an expression of his life experiences, told through his stories and songs. Performances include City Winery, Ryles Jazz Club, Midway Cafe, and Hard Rock Cafe in the Boston area; Silvana, Harlem and Rockwood Music Hall, Manhattan in New York; internationally at Radio City, Valencia, Spain; and locally in Maplewood and South Orange in Maplewoodstock, and opening for Vivian Green and Jon B. at SOPAC. Awarded Tracks Music Best R&B Song and Best Studio Sound 2021 for “Bittersweet”.

August 27 – GYPSY FUNK SQUAD Unique and eclectic dance group playing traditional and funk music from Turkey, Armenia, Egypt, Balkans, Greece, Israel, Lebanon, India and songs reminiscent of bohemian cafes and bazaars exotic from all over the world. The repertoire includes revisited gypsy-style rock tunes and original psychedelic surprises. Popular among belly dancers and tribal dance troupes, barefoot yoga dancers, and festival goers.

The Springfield Avenue Gazebo Summer Concert Series is presented by the Township of Maplewood, Department of Community Services in cooperation with the Springfield Avenue Partnership.
