It’s one of many reveals — humorous and otherwise — you can expect from Deadline’s Contenders Television Virtual Event: Documentary + Unscripted, which kicks off Saturday at 9 a.m. PT and takes you inside the series and of the hottest non-fiction films competing for honors this TV Awards Season.

Among the 21 series and 60 stars, creators and showrunners honored in the one-day event, Lucy and Desi Director Amy Poehler reveals how she uncovered the ‘human history’ of TV icons Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz, mining a trove of never-before-seen audio tapes of the showbiz couple. W. Kamau Bell tells us he took on fallen TV icon Bill Cosby on his Showtime series We need to talk about Cosbyrevealing when he started believing dozens of women accusing the actor-comedian of sexual assault.

Big-wave surfer Garrett McNamara, the larger-than-life subject of HBO’s documentary series 100 foot wavedetails what it’s like to be chased by a wall of water the size of a tsunami, and Daymond John, one of the stars of shark tankboldly states that he is the only shark in ABC’s Entrepreneurial Series “to bring all kinds of flavor.”

The Masked Singer panelist Robin Thicke throws shade at fellow judge Ken Jeong, and the show’s EP details his strategy for keeping the Fox show “fresh and inviting” for viewers, concealing celebrities in costumes ranging from from an armadillo and a baby mammoth to a space rabbit and a queen cobra. Queens of a Different Kind Make Sparkling Appearance: VH1 Stars RuPaul’s Drag Race.

Amazon Prime Video Executive Producers LuLaRich and the upcoming Apple TV+ series The big con break down an emerging subset of the true crime documentary genre – stories devoted to alleged large-scale frauds. The big con goes in depth with the aptly named Eric C. Conn, a colorful Kentucky attorney convicted of pulling off a $550 million Social Security scam. LuLaRich takes an entertaining look at DeAnne and Mark Stidham, founders of LuLaRoe, a company that made billions on leggings and other apparel before Washington state authorities accused the company of operating as a pyramid scheme. The series’ executive producer, Cori Shepherd Stern, brought real-life experience to the project, having already watched her own mother get caught up in yet another “multi-level marketing” operation.

Each panel begins with a gripping clip from the movie or show in question. The selection of Jeen-yuhs: A Kanye Trilogy contains a touching moment from Kanye West’s past, when the rap star returned to Chicago to visit his mother. It sparks a discussion about what the late Donda West meant to her famous son, especially as he struggled to make the transition from acclaimed record producer to full-fledged performer.

Janet Jackson goes home too, in the Lifetime multi-parter Janet Jackson, visiting Gary, IN, where she spent the early years of her life before following her famous brothers onto the concert stage. The EP and the show’s director tell us what it was like to accompany the pop icon on this journey.

Check out the day’s schedule and lineups below and follow our coverage all day on Deadline and via social media using the hashtag #DeadlineContenders. On Monday, we will launch a streaming site that will host the full panel videos.
