Live At The Linda: “Me and My Guitar”

0

Stretching from East Nashville, Joshua Black Wilkins’ mix of American music helps define the new “alternative country” sound. Taking influences from all genres of American music, his most recent work, Hellbent & Brokenhearted not only features the sounds of Nashville’s “lower Broadway,” but also more diverse instrumentation and song structures. Joshua’s music is both intimate and moving at times, and powerful and cruel at other times, with little imagination in his writing, his lyrics go straight to the throat. This concert was recorded in 2014. This is Joshua Black Wilkins Live at Linda.

Dom Flemons is an American multi-instrumentalist, singer and songwriter of early music, Piedmontese blues and neo-traditional country. He is a proficient player on banjo, fife, guitar, harmonica, percussion, quills and rhythm bones. He is known as “The American Songster” because his musical repertoire spans nearly a century of American folklore, ballads and melodies. He has performed with Mike Seeger, Joe Thompson, Martin Simpson, Boo Hanks, Taj Mahal, Old Crow Medicine Show, Guy Davis and Reverend Peyton’s Big Damn Band.

Dom is probably most famous for being a member of the Grammy Award-winning Carolina Chocolate Drops from their inception in 2005 until their breakup in 2013. OK, so a word of warning, tonight’s theme is ” Me and my guitar” but this set features a few songs with a banjo, but hey, it’s NPR, we can’t resist a good banjo. This set comes to us after our breakup in 2013, here is Dom Flemons, live at The Linda.

Singer, singer-songwriter and guitarist Syd Straw first made a name for herself in the Golden Palominos, a group fronted by Anton Fier that achieved a cult following in the 1980s. Her debut album Capricorn Records, ” War and Peace”, was released in 1996, and since then its unique blend of folk-rock and blues-rock has found its way to Triple A (adult alternative album) radio stations and their audiences across the world. country. Straw released “Surprise” in 1990 to strong reviews. This recording chronicled Straw’s emergence as a songwriter; she had seen herself primarily as a performer of songs. OnSurprise, Straw was joined by Michael Stipe (REM), John Doe (X), Ry Cooder, Daniel Lanois, Don Was, Richard Thompson and Marshall Crenshaw. And fun fact, Syd Straw is the daughter of The Pajama Game actor Jack Straw. This concert dates from 2013, here is Syd Straw live at Linda.
