A free donation hip-hop concert will provide the Fort Dodgers with another entertainment option tonight.
Strange Music’s Jehry Robinson will lead the event, which kicks off at 6 p.m. at Fort Frenzy, 3232 First Ave. S.
Robinson is described as a promising artist by Leah Hovey, the event’s organizer.
The New York native’s first release on the Strange Music label called “20 / Twenty – Chapter 1,” Ranked at No. 23 on the Billboard Rap charts when released, according to its official website.
Robinson will be touring with popular American rapper Tech N9ne in the coming months.
“It’s a blessing that we were able to have him before he went on tour”, Hovey said.
Hovey admits the timing of the concert is unusual with Shellabration, Fort Dodge’s biggest concert of the year, taking place the same night. But she said the hip-hop gig had been in the works for several months.
“This show has been scheduled since before the pandemic struck”, Hovey said. “And we just kept pushing him away. When we got him (Robinson), I wasn’t really able to change him.
Admission to the concert is a gift of free will. It is open to all ages.
From 3 p.m. to 5 p.m., participants will play games and mingle with the artists.
“We want to invite people to come, if they can”, Hovey said. “The show will start at 6 am. This will give those engaged in Shellabration or the Sports Park Raceway the opportunity to see what we have been up to, without having to commit to tickets. . “
The concert will take place inside Fort Frenzy. Other artists performing include: Scar The Monsterr, Fetty Fred, The Abnorm, Rome Gotti, and King Dougie.
Hovey said the concert provides another option for young people who enjoy hip-hop music.
“To provide an alternative source of entertainment for the young generation”, she said. “Bring hip-hop events to the Fort Dodge area.”
Additional profits collected after costs are covered will be donated to two local nonprofits – Athletics For Education and Success and Building Community.
“When I decided to make it a free event, I had invested so much in it that I didn’t expect to get much out of it” Hovey said. “Over the past year, I have done a lot of work in the Twin Cities, relief work and work with activists. “
Hovey said Charles Clayton, director of AFES, had a positive influence on her.
“He became a huge mentor in dealing with activists, keeping things positive”, Hovey said. “It’s a kind of thing to pay up front. He invested in other projects.
In terms of community development, Hovey said she supports Zac Nuzum’s vision. Nuzum founded Building Community in the fall of 2020. It is a non-profit organization aimed at helping community members find employment and leadership.
“As long as my expenses are covered, I’m not really concerned about the money in my pocket at this pointâ€, Hovey said. “If we get donations, we might as well put them in a positive place in the community. “
