FSU School of Dance party returns to the stage

Florida State University Dance School presents “An Evening of Dance”, an annual event that showcases the ingenious choreography and the wide range of performance talents of the school’s students and faculty.

Performances for “An Evening of Dance” will take place at 7:30 pm on Friday, November 19 and at 2 and 7:30 pm on Saturday, November 20 at the Nancy Smith Fichter Dance Theater in Montgomery Hall. The concert series offers a captivating and diverse arrangement of classical, contemporary and modern pieces.

“The dedication of students and teachers to their craft and to their distinction in the field of dance is undeniable, making it a memorable and exciting event,” said Anjali Austin, President of the School of Dance.

An excerpt from the work of artist and choreographer Ronald K. Brown, “Four Corners”, to music by Carl Hancock Rux, will be performed on eight current students and alumni.

Brown’s choreography blends modern dance and West African influences to portray characters seeking a life of peace and freedom with the help of ‘angels in their corners’.

Professor Suzanne Farrell of the School of Dance Krafft, principal dancer of the world-renowned New York City Ballet, winner of the Kennedy Center in 2005 and founder of the Suzanne Farrell Ballet Company, performs an excerpt from “Divertimento No. 15” by George Balanchine.

Three different cast of FSU dance majors will perform the reconstructed piece.

Rachel Hunter, Assistant Professor, Production Manager and FSU Dance Alumnus, will be directing retired faculty member Dan Wagoner’s “Suite Dan”, a collection of three solos that demonstrate an element of character and style. of Wagoner’s movement.

Hunter worked alongside Wagoner on this process and studied archive footage to adapt each solo “Broken Hearted Rag Dance”, “Eyes Like Empty Ballrooms” and “Short Ride in a Fast Machine”.

The dynamic 2015 piece by Associate Professor Gwen Welliver “What a Horse!” Will be staged and performed by students from the School of Dance. Inspired by Paul Klee’s 1928 drawing of the same name, Welliver used the image of the warped and obscure horse to create a fast-paced, physically demanding performance.

Welliver is a Fellow of the Bogliasco Foundation, a Fellow of the New York Foundation for the Arts, and winner of the New York Dance and Performance Bessie Award for Sustained Achievement.

Tickets for “An Evening of Dance” shows cost $ 18 for adults, $ 16 for seniors, $ 12 for children and non-FSU students, and $ 10 for FSU students with ID. All seats are general admission.
