The new year has arrived and with it the cold of January. If it’s too cold to spend a lot of time outdoors, why not go to concerts in Saskatoon instead? With classical and orchestral performances, jazz-pop and rock, the choice is vast.

The romantic viola

Elixir Ensemble presents an afternoon of heartwarming music by Brahms, Glinka and Schumann for viola and piano. The star artists of this concert will be violist Geoff Cole and pianist Kathleen Solose.

“This concert will be a unique opportunity to hear the wonderful marriage of viola and piano, playing sublime music by Brahms, Schumann and Glinka,” said Cole.

“The sound of the viola is dark and sultry and is the perfect vehicle for an intimate expression,” said Solose.

Elixir Ensemble will perform on January 8, at 2:30 p.m., at the Emmanuel Anglican Church, 609 Dufferin Avenue. Tickets are $ 25, available at eventbrite.ca. Tickets for students and low-income people are available at the door.

Saskatoon Philharmonic Orchestra

The Saskatoon Philharmonic Orchestra is made up of amateur and professional musicians. They perform classic pieces from well-known composers and local talent.

“I have to perform in a concert setting for family, friends and strangers in order to feel all the excitement of what we have been working on over the past few months. This performance will have added significance as it represents our band’s return to public music sharing after so many months, ”said flautist Alex Brooks.

The Saskatoon Philharmonic Orchestra will perform on January 22 at 7:30 p.m. at the Robert Hinitt Castle Theater at Aden Bowman Collegiate. Tickets are $ 10 to $ 15, available from orchestra members, the McNally Robinson bookstore or at the door. Information at saskatoonphilharmicorchestra.com.

Canadian singer-songwriter and pianist Laila Biali performs a mix of jazz and pop genres. She will be accompanied by percussionist and husband Ben Wittman and bassist Jodi Proznick.

“I can’t wait to return to The Bassment as part of their special series celebrating women in jazz. It will be almost exactly two years since we last graced their stage, and it’s still one of the most rewarding listening rooms to perform in – a space where we feel like we are. as a family, ”Biali said.

Bouncing between ballads and more rock tracks, the Edmonton-based indie pop trio leaves a lasting impression in their live performances.

“Saskatoon has always been such a welcoming stopover for us to tour and we can’t wait to let go and marvel at all the beauties coming to the show. This will be our first time in Saskatchewan. since the release of Time For Yourself, so we’re very excited to play some of the new tracks and of course the golden oldies too, ”said singer and guitarist Trevor Mann.
