PHILADELPHIA (CBS) – Offers continue on Saturday morning as holiday shoppers prepare to exit. And Saturday, it’s about staying local – it’s Small Business Saturday.

On Main Street in Manayunk, there are dozens of family-owned shops to choose from. Small Business Saturday aims to support independent local businesses.

According to the Small Business Association, small businesses create two-thirds of new jobs in the United States. They also represent 44% of the country’s economic activity.

It has been a difficult year and a half for many companies in Manayunk.

First, there was the lockdown due to the pandemic, and then in September, the remnants of Hurricane Ida left parts of Manayunk under several feet of water.

Pat Feeney, the owner of Main Street Music which is celebrating 30 years in business, said his business is doing well despite the pandemic.

“We have had a lot of new customers in the past year and a half since the pandemic,” Feeney said. “When we reopened after the pandemic, it looked like a lot of people were buying turntables. We were doing great and business was good, especially at the beginning because people had nothing else to spend their money on because there were no bars or restaurants. Especially in our case, concerts, so we were getting a lot of money from people’s music, rather than concert tickets and stuff like that, so it’s been going well since we survived the pandemic. “

Small Business Saturday will launch later this morning.
