DOMi and JD Beck Perform NPR Tiny Desk Concert [Watch]

New jazz prodigy duo DOMi & JD Beck formalized their Small desk beginning Wednesday. The young drummer and keyboardist stopped NPR Music in Washington, DC and performed selections from their recently released debut album, Not tightthe first version on Anderson Paakit is Apeshit label.

DOMi & JD opened with “Not Tight”, the title track from their debut album and, as DOMi says after playing the song, the first song they wrote together. Next, they performed “SMiLE,” the first song the duo ever officially released.

JD then introduced “U DON’T HAVE TO ROB ME.” “It’s the first song we’ve ever sung together. We’ve never played it in front of anyone… so we’ll try not to screw it up. After playing the song – the lyrics of which read: “You don’t have to rob me / It’s not really worth it / I only have credit cards / And I can just cancel them”, – Beck explained: “We wrote this song when DOMi almost got stabbed by a homeless man.The duo closed the set with “What Up”.

For ambiance, the duo decorated the Tiny Desk with the “vibrant vines, grass, and vibrant flower arrangements from the album cover,” according to the description of the video. Throughout the performance, DOMi and JD display impeccable musicianship, with flamboyant chops and a heightened sense of melody and groove, respectively. They also showcase their charming and irreverent humor and self-mockery.
