A new era dawns for San Francisco’s beloved Castro Theater.

The famous movie palace, which opened its doors 100 years ago with a screening of the 1922 silent film ‘Across the Continent’, is being transformed into a multi-purpose venue that will host much more than just films. It will also host a variety of live events, under the direction of Berkeley-based concert promoter, Another Planet Entertainment.

“The Castro Theater is a magnificent building that we will be upgrading for more use in the future,” said Gregg Perloff, CEO and co-founder of Another Planet. “We want to activate and revitalize the building, make improvements to the guest and performer experience, including upgrades to the locker rooms, restoration of the marquee and blade, and expansion of the food service.

“We want to present all kinds of programs in the theater – comedy, music, film, community and private events and more. We look forward to contributing more to the culture and economy of this vibrant neighborhood.

Another Planet, which is known for producing the Outside Lands festival in Golden Gate Park as well as hosting shows at the Fox Theater in Oakland, the Greek Theater in Berkeley, the Bill Graham Civic Auditorium in San Francisco and other venues, plans to hold shows at the Castro over the next eight months, then close the doors for renovations.

The only show currently announced is Lovett or Leave It – featuring comedian Jon Lovett and friends – on March 4.

Another Planet will be the exclusive developer and operator of the theater, which is owned by Bay Properties, Inc., and will strive to improve the venue “by implementing significant upgrades to sound, lighting, production , HVAC and the theater’s trademark marquee, among other facets of the building,” according to a press release.

“After operating the Castro Theater for nearly 100 years, we have chosen to partner with Another Planet Entertainment for the next evolution of our historic theater,” said Chris Nasser Padian, Vice President of Bay Properties. “Another Planet is an ideal partner, as they have a rich history with the city and in the rehabilitation of historic places. Bay Properties is thrilled that the partnership with APE continues the legacy of the Castro Theater and the Castro neighborhood.
